Dulles International is one of three major airports serving the Washington D.C. area (the other two being [[Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA/KDCA)]] and [[Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI/KBWI)]]). It is by far the largest of the three, and serves as the main international gateway for the U.S. capital city. The airport serves as an international hub for United, and, until the airline went out of business, also served as the hub for ill-fated Independence Air. The airfield has three main runways: 1L/19R, 1R/19L, and 12/30.

==Official Spotting Locations==

Unfortunately, the old observation deck at the base of the original control tower has been closed and covered up, due to Main Terminal renovations. It is still visible in the Google Earth photo.

The best on-site "official" spotting is provided by the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center, explained below.

===Udvar-Hazy Center Observation Tower===
The observation and viewing tower at the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center provides fairly decent views of aircraft approaching the 1's, and deparing the 19's, as the tower sits between the approach paths of the 1's.
This place is good ONLY to view airplanes on approach.
I wouldn't recommend this location at all. You can get much better shots of arriving airplanes from the parking lot in front of the museum.

==Other Spotting Locations==

===Purple Economy Lot===
The Purple Economy Lot offers a great vantage point directly under the approach/departure path, less than a half-mile away from the threshold of runway 19L. Parking there is $3/hr, and no more than $9/day, so if you stay more than three hours, you're almost getting free spotting. The lot tends to be sparse, so you may stick out. As long as you have an ID and are causing no trouble, you should be fine. After all, they're making money from you.

===Central Airport===
The Daily Garages offer a better vantage point for all three runways. Daily Garage I offers a spectacular view of the Main Terminal and Signature Flight Support. If you have a decent lens, you should be able to get decent shots, but this point is more for overviews because of the distance. Daily Garage II offers a great view of the south cargo ramp, which houses DHL and UPS. Further north is Fed-Ex. Occasionally, Piedmont-Hawthorne will put larger customers down here, such as the UAE's B747SP. You will need a decent lens to get good pictures of the north cargo ramp.

Both garages are $5/hr with a max of $15/day. Again, make sure you have an ID in case you are questioned. They may ask you to leave here, though, because these lots tend to be more popular.

===Udvar-Hazy Center Parking Lot===
The parking lot for the Udvar-Hazy Center is considered by many to be better than the observation tower itself, especially for 1R landings. From the entrance to the parking lot, proceed past the museum and park at the far end of the lot. Other spots may have more trees to contend with. Parking is $12/day; museum admission itself is free. Restrooms and food are available in the museum.

===Westfield High School===
The school is a good distance away (3.75mi from the threshold of runway 1L and 3mi from the threshold of runway 1R), but offers a decent spot for approaches to runways 1L and 1R. As long as school is not in session, security tends to be lax or non-existent. The student lot is often used by parents to teach their children to drive, along with other activities, so your presence will go largely unnoticed.

The school is off of Route 50 on Stonecroft Blvd.

==Locations to Avoid==
Avoid Signature Flight Support and Landmark Aviation. Both are very strict about security and do not like anyone except customers. This includes parking or even standing in their lots.

==Regular Traffic==
IAD gets some great rare (for the USA) airlines, such as Ethiopian. The airport is also visited occasionally by the German Luftwaffe, RAF and other foreign dignitaries.

The best on-site "official" spotting is provided by the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center, explained below.

==Official Spotting Locations==

Unfortunately, the old observation deck at the base of the original control tower has been closed and covered up, due to Main Terminal renovations. It is still visible in the Google Earth photo.

The best on-site "official" spotting is provided by the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center, explained below.

===Udvar-Hazy Center Observation Tower===

==Other Spotting Locations==

===Purple Economy Lot===

===Central Airport===

===Udvar-Hazy Center Parking Lot===

===Westfield High School===

==Locations to Avoid==
Avoid Signature Flight Support and Piedmont-Hawthorne. Both are very strict about security and do not like anyone except customers. This includes parking or even standing in their lots.

==Regular Traffic==
IAD gets some great rare (for the USA) airlines, such as Ethiopian. The airport is also visited occasionally by the German Luftwaffe, RAF and other foreign dignitaries.

Virginia Tech Airport began as an unnamed flying field in a farmer's pasture in 1913. In 1929, members of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute's engineering program surveyed and found the plot was large enough to accommodate a two-runway airfield. In July of that year, the Virginia Highway Department began work on the airfield, which was then called VPI Airport. By year's end, the construction came to an end, yielding an airport that could accommodate the larger aircraft of the time. The airport officially opened in 1931 as Virginia Tech Airport, with the hangar built in 1940.

The field hosted the University's flight training program until 2004, when the flight school was disbanded prior to the airport being sold to the county. Despite the loss of the flight school, the airport is still the home of the Hokie Flying Club and several aircraft. The hangar has been replaced by a new terminal, but still serves as a shelter for several of the based aircraft, of which two are owned and operated by the University.

The airfield has two runways: 12/30 and 06/24 (Closed)
The closest Commercial airport to Virginia Tech Airport is [[Roanoke Regional Airport (ROA/KROA)]].

==Official Spotting Locations==

There are no official spotting locations at the Virginia Tech Airport.

==Other Spotting Locations==

===Main Terminal===
The airport staff is very friendly and will generally allow people to accompany them on a quick walk around the tarmac. One of the staff members is an amateur photographer and would probably enjoy the company and conversation. As long as you are genuinely interested in aviation and do not appear to have ulterior motives, you will most likely be accommodated. Even if they are reluctant to let you walk around the tarmac, they will probably let you take shots from the staircase leading down to the tarmac.
As friendly as they may be, game days draw a lot of traffic, which places a large demand on the staff, so game days are generally not good days to ask for a tour.

===West Airport===
There is a walking trail that runs from the northwest end to the southeast end of the airport. There is a point on the trail that is only a few hundred feet from the threshold of runway 12. Depending on the type of traffic and the winds, you can get spectacular shots here. Since general aviation aircraft seldom use the entire runway, departures over this spot aren't spectacular, unless you have a good zoom. On game days, however, the airport attracts several jets that require a good amount of runway, which could yield amazing departure shots. Arrival shots are great from this spot, as it is on a small hill looking over the runway.

To get to this spot, I recommend parking in the airport lot and walking. Weekday and gameday parking in the nearby lots is heavily regulated by the campus parking services.

===Southwest Airport===
As the trail continues, it passes by the end of the closed runway, where a weather station is now located. The closed runway is also the parking area for based aircraft. On game days, single-transient aircraft are parked here. Though not an amazing spot for flight shots, there are always interesting aircraft parked here on game days, which could make for some nice static shots.

There is a tall wire fence between you and the aircraft, so prepare to be crafty. For parking, see the comment in West Airport.

===Southeast Airport===
There are several locations on the Southeast side of the airport that could work for spotting. For shots of static aircraft, you may want to try walking over to the hangar. There is a fence there that will be in the way, however. If you walk past the hangar, there is a small grassy area from which you could get some nice shots of arrivals to runway 30. Depending on your location on the grassy plot, you may be dealing with the perimeter fence again.

For parking, see the comment in West Airport. You might get away with pulling off onto the grass on the Southeast side, if you are only staying for a few minutes, but I wouldn't recommend walking out of eye-shot of your car. If you are nearby and the police drive by, they'll probably just tell you to move your car. If you're not there, they might leave a ticket. Your best bet is the airport parking lot.

==Locations to Avoid==
Any parking lot other than the airport parking lot, especially on weekdays and game days.
==Regular Traffic==
Virginia Tech Airport is the base for several aircraft, as well as a destination for a few daily business flights.

===Based Traffic and Aircraft===
*'''Virginia Tech Air Transportation Services''': Operates a Citation II and a Citation Ultra on an irregular schedule to various destinations. If you are looking for shots of these aircraft, you can find the flight plans along with departure and arrival times on [http://flightaware.com FlightAware].
*'''Shelton Aviation''': The only official flight instruction operation on the field. Operates a Cessna 152.
*'''Hokie Flying Club''': Operates a Cessna 150 and a Piper Cherokee.

===Transient Traffic and Aircraft===
*'''Corning''': Operates a Dornier 228. Several flights per week on an irregular schedule.

*'''Game Day Traffic''':
**Single-Engine Props: Cessnas and Pipers, along with the occasional Diamond
**Twin-Engine Props: Cessnas, Beechcraft and Pipers, along with a MU-2 and an AeroCommander
**Twin-Engine Jets: Cessnas along with the occasional Gulfstream IV
**Tri-jets: Occasional visits by a Falcon 900

===Military Traffic and Aircraft===
Because of the University's Corps of Cadets program, several cadets "return" to the field irregularly to practice approaches, or just fly over the campus.
The aircraft most often seen are:

Virginia Tech Airport began as an unnamed flying field in a farmer's pasture in 1913. In 1929, members of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute's engineering program surveyed and found the plot was large enough to accommodate a two-runway airfield. In July of that year, the Virginia Highway Department began work on the airfield, which was then called VPI Airport. By year's end, the construction came to an end, yielding an airport tha could accomodate the larger aircraft of the time.

The airfield has two runways: 12/30 and 06-24 (Closed)
The closest Commercial airport to Virginia Tech Airport is [[Roanoke Regional Airport - Woodrum Field (ROA/KROA)]].

==Official Spotting Locations==

There are no official spotting locations at the Virginia Tech Airport.

==Other Spotting Locations==

===Main Terminal===

===West Airport===

To get to this spot, I reccommend parking in the airport lot and walking. Weekday and gameday parking in the nearby lots is heavily regulated by the campus parking services.

===Southwest Airport===

===Southeast Airport===

You might get away with pulling off onto the grass on the Southeast side, if you are only staying for a few minutes, but I wouldn't reccommend walking out of eye-shot of your car. If you are nearby and the police drive by, they'll probably just tell you to move your car. If you're not there, they might leave a ticket. Your best bet is the airport parking lot.

==Official Spotting Locations==

Unfortunately, the old observation deck at the base of the original control tower has been closed and covered up, due to Main Terminal renovations. It is still visible in the Google Earth photo.<br>
<br>
The best on-site "official" spotting is provided by the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center, explained below.<br>
<br>
===Udvar-Hazy Center Observation Tower===
The observation and viewing tower at the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center provides fairly decent views of aircraft approaching the 1's, and deparing the 19's, as the tower sits between the approach paths of the 1's. Some color correction will be required, as the windows cause photos to have a blue tint to them.<br>
<br>
I wouldn't recommend this location at all. You can get much better shots of arriving airplanes from the parking lot in front of the museum.

==Other Spotting Locations==

===Purple Economy Lot===

===Central Airport===
You will need a decent lens to get good pictures of the north cargo ramp.<br>
Both garages are $5/hr with a max of $15/day. Again, make sure you have an ID in case you are questioned. They may ask you to leave here, though, because these lots tend to be more popular.

===Udvar-Hazy Center Parking Lot===

===Westfield High School===
The school is a good distance away (3.75mi from the threshold of runway 1L and 3mi from the threshold of runway 1R), but offers a decent spot for approaches to runways 1L and 1R. As long as school is not in session, security tends to be lax or non-existant. The student lot is often used by parents to teach their children to drive, along with other activities, so your presence will go largely unnoticed.<br>
The school is off of Route 50 on Stonecroft Blvd.<br>
<br>

==Locations to Avoid==
Avoid Signature Flight Support and Piedmont-Hawthorne. Both are very strict about security and do not like anyone except customers. This includes parking or even standing in their lots.

==Regular Traffic==
IAD gets some great rare (for the USA) airlines, such as Ethiopian and South African plus Saudi Arabian. The airport is also visited occasionally by the German Luftwaffe, RAF and other foreign dignitaries. Aircraft of other militaries or foreign dignitaries are normally parked at Signature Flight Support, which is at the North end of runway 1R-19L.
===Domestic Traffic and Aircraft===
*'''Air Canada''': Air Canada has a few arrivals from Toronto, ON using CRJ-200s. ''Treated as domestic because of a security arrangement between the US and Canada.''
**'''Air Canada Jazz''': Air Canada Jazz operates CRJ-200s.

*'''Air Tran''': Operates 717s
*'''Alaska Airlines''': Alaska Airlines operates 737-400s from Seattle and Los Angeles.
*'''American Airlines''': American has a large number of daily from its hubs. Several aircraft are used, including the 737, 757, 767, MD-80.
**'''American Eagle''': American Eagle operates many flights using the ERJ-140.

*'''Continental Airlines''': Dulles is used as an alternate on occasion for Continental flights that have been diverted, particularly in the summer.
**'''Continental Express''': Operates ERJ-140s and -140s with winglets.

*'''Delta Air Lines''': Delta operates the 737-800, 757-200, 767-300, and MD-90 here.
**'''Delta Connection''': CRJ-200s and CRJ-700s

*'''JetBlue Airways''': JetBlue operates both A320s and ERJ-190s.
*'''MaxJet:''' MaxJet is relatively new to Dulles and operates 767-200s.
*'''Northwest Airlines''': Northwest operates A319s and DC-9s.
*'''Southwest Airlines''': Southwest is new to Dulles, but operates several flights using a 737-700W.
*'''Sun Country Airlines''': Sun Country operates a 737-800.
*'''United Airlines''': United has a hub at Dulles and operates many flights daily using several aircraft. This includes the 737-300, 737-500, 747-400, 757-200, 767-300, 777-200, A319, and A320, in both new and old liveries.
==Official Spotting Locations==

===Location===

==Other Spotting Locations==
===Gravely Point===
Spotters are blessed with an amazing vantage point just north of the airport, called Gravely Point. The south end of the park is about a quarter mile from the threshold of runway 19. This offers great shots of both departures and arrivals. The arrivals come in very low, so I recommend ear plugs for those who have sensitive ears. The park has its own free parking and you will be largely undisturbed, as this people have been taking pictures from there for years. Many times you will be standing among several tourists and sports players just watching the airport activity.
===Walking Paths===
There is a path going from Gravely Point to the south side of the airport and beyond that hugs the airport boundary. The path goes 200ft behind runway 15 (regional traffic runway) at its closest point, but a jet-blast/prop-wash wall blocks any good shots. At another point, the path goes up onto a bridge, which offers a good view of runways 15 and 19. There is another bridge farther south towards the USAir gates of the new terminal. You will need a good lens to get decent shots here, due to the distance. You can make your way from the path up to the top of the parking garages for a different angle. This offers a good shot of the terminal.
At the south end of the airport, while still on the walking path, you can get a nice view of the GA terminal, though you will have to contend with cars in a parking lot.<br>
<br>
''Be aware that the walking path does have a good deal of other people using it, to include bikers, skaters and other pedestrians.'' <br>
This is not so much of a problem until you get on the bridges, where there is limited space to for the path.

==Locations to Avoid==

===Location===

==Regular Traffic==
Most jet traffic uses the main runway 1-19. Landings to the south follow the Potomac river and make a 40° turn over the George Mason bridge. This unusual arrival procedure is similar to Kai-Tak's infamous IGS 13 approach but without heavy jets. Prohibited airspace north of the airport containing the White House and Capitol mandates this procedure. The Washington Monument also would be a hinderance to safe navigation. Commuter planes may often use the smaller runways 4-22 and 15-33. General Aviation and non scheduled charters were not allowed into Reagan National when the airport reopened after the 9/11 attacks. Beginning in October 2005 some general aviation aircraft have been allowed to return. They must have passenger manifests submitted 24 hours in advance. Pilots must be fingerprinted and undergo background checks. The plane, passengers and flight crew must be screened at a designated gateway airport and an armed marshall must be onboard. Due to the complex requirements general aviation traffic remains a rarity. Sports team charters on commercial airliners continue to use [[KIAD|Dulles]] because of these restrictions.

==Official Spotting Locations==

Unfortunately, the old observation deck at the base of the original control tower has been closed and covered up, due to Main Terminal renovations. It is still visible in the Google Earth photo.<br>
<br>
The best on-site "official" spotting is provided by the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center, explained below.<br>
<br>
===Udvar-Hazy Center Observation Tower===
<br>
I wouldn't recommend this location at all. You can get much better shots of arriving airplanes from the parking lot in front of the museum.

==Other Spotting Locations==

===Purple Economy Lot===

===Central Airport===
You will need a decent lens to get good pictures of the north cargo ramp.<br>
Both garages are $5/hr with a max of $15/day. Again, make sure you have an ID in case you are questioned. They may ask you to leave here, though, because these lots tend to be more popular.

===Udvar-Hazy Center Parking Lot===

===Westfield High School===
<br>

==Locations to Avoid==
Avoid Signature Flight Support and Piedmont-Hawthorne. Both are very strict about security and do not like anyone except customers. This includes parking or even standing in their lots.

==Regular Traffic==
IAD gets some great rare (for the USA) airlines, such as Ethiopian and South African plus Saudi Arabian. The airport is also visited occasionally by the German Luftwaffe, RAF and other foreign dignitaries. These aircraft are normally parked at Signature Flight Support, which is at the North end of runway 1R-19L.
===International Traffic and Aircraft===
Aeroflot - B763<br>
Air France - A332, 772 (GE90s)<br>
Ethiopian - B763<br>
KLM - A332<br>
Korean Air - B744<br>
Lufthansa - A343 (occasionally A346), B744<br>
Saudi - B744<br>
South African - B744<br>
SAS - A343<br>
Virgin - A343 (occasionally A346)<br>
===Military Traffic and Aircraft===
Lufwaffe - A310, C-160<br>
RAF - VC-10<br>
The school is off of Route 50 on Stonecroft Blvd.<br>
<br>

==Locations to Avoid==
Avoid Signature Flight Support and Piedmont-Hawthorne. Both are very strict about security and do not like anyone except customers. This includes parking or even standing in their lots.

==Regular Traffic==

==Official Spotting Locations==

Unfortunately, the old observation deck at the base of the original control tower has been closed and covered up, due to Main Terminal renovations. It is still visible in the Google Earth photo.<br>
<br>
The best on-site "official" spotting is provided by the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center, explained below.<br>
<br>
===Udvar-Hazy Center Observation Tower===
<br>
I wouldn't recommend this location at all. You can get much better shots of arriving airplanes from the parking lot in front of the museum.

==Other Spotting Locations==

===Purple Economy Lot===

===Central Airport===
You will need a decent lens to get good pictures of the north cargo ramp.<br>
Both garages are $5/hr with a max of $15/day. Again, make sure you have an ID in case you are questioned. They may ask you to leave here, though, because these lots tend to be more popular.

===Udvar-Hazy Center Parking Lot===

===Westfield High School===
===Location===

==Other Spotting Locations==
'''Gravely Point'''<br>
Spotters are blessed with an amazing vantage point just north of the airport, called Gravely Point. The south end of the park is about a quarter mile from the threshold of runway 19. This offers great shots of both departures and arrivals. The arrivals come in very low, so I recommend ear plugs for those who have sensitive ears. The park has its own free parking and you will be largely undisturbed, as this people have been taking pictures from there for years. Many times you will be standing among several tourists and sports players just watching the airport activity.<br>
<br>
'''Walking Paths'''<br>
<br>
''Be aware that the walking path does have a good deal of other people using it, to include bikers, skaters and other pedestrians.'' <br>
This is not so much of a problem until you get on the bridges, where there is limited space to for the path.

==Official Spotting Locations==

Unfortunately, the old observation deck at the base of the original control tower has been closed and covered up, due to Main Terminal renovations. It is still visible in the Google Earth photo.<br>
<br>
The best on-site "official" spotting is provided by the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center, explained below.<br>
<br>
'''Udvar-Hazy Center Observation Tower'''<br>
The observation and viewing tower at the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center provides fairly decent views of aircraft approaching the 1's, and deparing the 19's, as the tower sits between the approach paths of the 1's. Some color correction will be required, as the windows cause photos to have a blue tint to them.<br>
<br>
I wouldn't recommend this location at all. You can get much better shots of arriving airplanes from the parking lot in front of the museum.

==Other Spotting Locations==

'''Purple Economy Lot'''<br>
The Purple Economy Lot offers a great vantage point directly under the approach/departure path, less than a half-mile away from the threshold of runway 19L. Parking there is $3/hr, and no more than $9/day, so if you stay more than three hours, you're almost getting free spotting. The lot tends to be sparse, so you may stick out. As long as you have an ID and are causing no trouble, you should be fine. After all, they're making money from you.<br>
<br>
'''Central Airport'''<br>
The Daily Garages offer a better vantage point for all three runways. Daily Garage I offers a spectacular view of the Main Terminal and Signature Flight Support. If you have a decent lens, you should be able to get decent shots, but this point is more for overviews because of the distance. Daily Garage II offers a great view of the south cargo ramp, which houses DHL and UPS. Further north is Fed-Ex. Occasionally, Piedmont-Hawthorne will put larger customers down here, such as the UAE's B747SP. You will need a decent lens to get good pictures of the north cargo ramp.<br>
Both garages are $5/hr with a max of $15/day. Again, make sure you have an ID in case you are questioned. They may ask you to leave here, though, because these lots tend to be more popular.<br>
<br>
'''Udvar-Hazy Center Parking Lot'''<br>
The parking lot for the Udvar-Hazy Center is considered by many to be better than the observation tower itself, especially for 1R landings. From the entrance to the parking lot, proceed past the museum and park at the far end of the lot. Other spots may have more trees to contend with. Parking is $12/day; museum admission itself is free. Restrooms and food are available in the museum.<br>
<br>
'''Westfield High School'''<br>
The school is a good distance away (3.75mi from the threshold of runway 1L and 3mi from the threshold of runway 1R), but offers a decent spot for approaches to runways 1L and 1R. As long as school is not in session, security tends to be lax or non-existant. The student lot is often used by parents to teach their children to drive, along with other activities, so your presence will go largely unnoticed.<br>
The school is off of Route 50 on Stonecroft Blvd.<br>
<br>
==Locations to Avoid==
Avoid Signature Flight Support and Piedmont-Hawthorne. Both are very strict about security and do not like anyone except customers. This includes parking or even standing in their lots.

==Regular Traffic==
IAD gets some great rare (for the USA) airlines, such as Ethiopian and South African plus Saudi Arabian. The airport is also visited occasionally by the German Luftwaffe, RAF and other foreign dignitaries. These aircraft are normally parked at Signature Flight Support, which is at the North end of runway 1R-19L.<br>
Both garages are $5/hr with a max of $15/day. Again, make sure you have an ID in case you are questioned. They may ask you to leave here, though, because these lots tend to be more popular.<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
==Locations to Avoid==
Avoid Signature Flight Support and Piedmont-Hawthorne. Both are very strict about security and do not like anyone except customers. This includes parking or even standing in their lots.

==Regular Traffic==
==Official Spotting Locations==

===Udvar-Hazy Center Observation Tower===

The observation and viewing tower at the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center provides fairly decent views of aircraft approaching the 1's, and deparing the 19's, as the tower sits between the approach paths of the 1's. Some color correction will be required, as the windows cause photos to have a blue tint to them.

I wouldn't recommend this location at all. You can get much better shots of arriving airplanes from the parking lot in front of the museum.

==Other Spotting Locations==

===Udvar-Hazy Center Parking Lot===
