Zurich airport is the only airport of the city of Zurich, the Swiss centre of finance and economy.
The airport is located about 10 kilometers northeast of the city and can easily be reached by car, bus or train.

Today there are about 100 airlines offering almost 150 connections to every continent in the world except Australia. 17.3 million passengers were handled in 2004. In 2003 the new terminal, terminal E, also called "Midfield", was opened. Three runways, most of which are equipped with an ILS-system are providing a smoothly running service.
Runways, Terminals and their usage
28

2500m

VORDME

Main departing runway, landings in the evening

always

34

3700m

ILS

Landing rwy morning, sometimes heavy-TOs

medium

Because of many people living around the airport are complaining about the noise, the airport authority had to make a detailed concept of runway usage. It is listed in the following table. Of course changes can be made because of reasons like weather, so I recommend listening to the ATIS (128.525) before going spotting.

Terminals and parking stands
At Zurich airport there are three Terminals, Terminal 1 (former A), Terminal 2 (former B), Terminal E (former Midfield).
In the table below is listed which airplanes can be seen in which area.

Terminal 1 (A)

This terminal is mostly used by Swiss for its European destinations using A32X and ARJ. All longhaul flights by Swiss (A332/A343) have moved to Terminal E. Some other European carriers can be found here, for example British Airways.
Best view from: Spotting Points 1 and 2

Terminal 2 (B)

Terminal 2 was closed when Terminal E was opened and the finger docks were demounted. In recent years the interior was used for events, but a complete reconstruction is starting in order to meet criteria for Schengen/non-Schengen traffic. As of Summer 2008, no more longhaul aircraft are being parked at Terminal 2 during the day. Due to a new fence erected for the construction work, only regional aircraft from LX, LH and AF are being parked next to Terminal 2; those longhaul aircraft that used to be parked here throughout the morning now use the cargo apron on the opposite side of runway 16/34.
Terminal 2 will be shortened in order to make space for a dual taxiway and will receive an additional level in order to seperate arriving from departing passengers.

Note, that from end of October 2008 onwards, the observation deck on Terminal 2 is scheduled to be closed for the time of reconstruction. The airport is said to provide enhanced access to the observation deck on Terminal E by bus (details to follow in time).
From what was disclosed by local staff, a observation deck will be part of the remodelled Terminal 2, but likely it will be enclosed in glass.
Best view from: Spotting Point 1

Terminal E (Midfield)

The terminal opened in 2003 is the point where all longhaul flights are handled. (Swiss, Emirates, Singapore, Malaysian, United, American, Delta, Continental, Air Canada, Korean, JAL). Gates are also used by charter airlines (Edelweiss, Belair, Air Berlin, ...).
Best view from: Spotting Point 2, but only the aircraft on the western side of the terminal which is about 1/3 of all aircrafts.

Mike-Stands

South of Terminal 2 there are the Mike-Stands (designated C and D but served by Taxiway Mike). These are stands served by bus. On these stands mostly medium airliners (A32X, B737, MD8X) from Lufthansa, SAS, Austrian and Iberia can be spotted.
Best view from: Spotting Point 1 (a little far away) and 5

ATC
Using an airband receiver can be very helpful to know what's going on. Luckily using airband receivers in Switzerland is allowed and police ignores it. I have never had any problems and there are many enthusiasts using airband receivers here.
I recommend listening to the tower because it is the most used frequency and you know about every landing and takeoff that is being performed.
Frequencies are listed at the beginning of this article.
Spotting Locations
In Zurich there are plenty of spotting positions some of which are really excellent. I designed a layer with all spotting-points for "Google Earth". Download (1,3KB)
The spotting-tips below refer to the numbers shown on the graphic on the right.

The first points (point 1 - point 5) are located at the airport. You can get there by car, by bus or by train.
Public transport is very well organised around the airport, the train station is located right in the airport, the bus terminal in front of the building. There are trains from Zurich Main station (Zurich HB) to the airport about every 15 minutes. The airport is an important bus-hub for the whole region.
Check PT-Timetable

Position 1: Observation Deck Terminal 2
The observation deck which is located on the roof of the whole terminal 2 is probably the most famous spotting point, because it is easy to reach, you have a great view on the planes as well as a restaurant.
Since terminal 2 has been shut down there isn't so much action anymore - nevertheless the observation deck remains an excellent spotting point, for example to watch the outbounds on rwy16.
The entrance fee is 2 francs, the location is open from 08.00-21.00 in the summer (27.3.-31.10) and 09.00-18.00 in the winter (1.11.-26.3.)
At the entrance to the observation desk there is a safety check like for normal passengers, but there are no restrictions for liquids. Tickets can be bought in the kiosk right beside the entrance.
Getting there: In the airport: Follow the signs to terminal 2 or "observation desk"
Equipment: Large observation desk with a shop, a restaurant, toilets, children's playground. Ticket shop for bus tours
Visible: Departures Rwy16, landings&departures Rwy34, aircraft taxiing on Echo, aircraft parked at terminal 2
Zoom: Je nach Perspektive. 100-300mm für Rwy16-TOs und Rwy34-Landungen, 50-150mm für E-taxiing, 17-100 für Flugzeuge am Terminal
Time: early morning until 1-2 pm
Position 2: Observation Deck Terminal E (Midfield)
When planning the new terminal they seem to have thought of the visitors and included an observation desk. This one is located on the western end of the roof, and you have access to about 1/3 of the terminal.
This observation desk can only be reached by bus departing from the obs-deck terminal 2 (Point 1) on Wednesdays (13.15-16.45) and on the weekend (11.45-16.45) every 30 minutes. Adolescents (6-16 years) have to pay 2 franks for a ticket, adults 4 franks. Tickets can be bought at the ticket office on the observation deck Terminal 2 (point 1)
On this observation deck you have a great view on foreign heavies and you are nearer to departures on Rwy28, although you might be facing into the sun. Furthermore, you have an excellent view onto Rwy16/34!
Official Homepage

Getting there: Get to point 1, buy a ticket and do a bus-ride.
Equipment: Quite a large area, equipped with vending machines and toilets
Visible: Aircrafts at terminal E, Takeoffs Rwy28, 16, 34, aircrafts taxiing to Rwy16
Zoom: Depending on the target. 100-300mm for TOs, 17-100mm for parked aircraft
Time: early morning until 3pm
Example shots:

Regular Traffic
Because of Zurich being quite an important international HUB there are some interesting planes around waiting to be spotted.
Besides the big European carriers which usually send their standard medium equipment to Zurich, many big carriers from other continents can be seen here arriving with their heavies. Some of these are:
American, Continental, Delta, Emirates, JAL, Malaysian, Singapore, Thai, United. In addition to that you have the Swiss lognhaul-fleet (9 A332 + 9 A343) as well as the heavies of local charter airlines Edelweiss (1 A332) and Belair (1 B763) which you don't see that often in Europe.
History
In 1913 the first plane took off from the Wahner Heide military training area on an artillery reconnaissance flight. In 1939 an airfield was built for the German Luftwaffe.
After World War II, British troops took over and expanded the airport. A 1,866m-runway was built in this period. In 1951 the airport was opened for civilian air traffic.

During the 50s and 60s two more runways and a new terminal were constructed. On 1 November 1970 a Boeing 747 took off for New York for the first time.

In 1986 Cologne/Bonn Airport was chosen by United Parcel Service|UPS as the location for their European hub.

In the late 90s the Airport started an expansion program. Several new parking lots and a second terminal were built, and in 2004 a railway station on the new InterCity Express|ICE-high-speed-track Cologne-Frankfurt was opened.

Coinciding with the start of several low-cost airlines in Germany, Cologne/Bonn opened new capacity. This enabled the airport to make competitive offers to the airlines. Consequently, Germanwings and Hapag-Lloyd Express started operations from Cologne/Bonn as their hub in the fall of 2002. They were joined by easyJet in late 2003.
As a result, the number of passengers in 2003 rose by 43% compared to 2002.

Cologne Bonn Airport has closed 2016 with a record result. For the first time in the airport’s history, 11.9 million passengers were recorded in the period from January to December.

Official Spotting Locations
The airport observation terraces provide visitors with a view of the principal take-off and landing runway, the apron, cargo areas and the military section.
Cologne Bonn Airport is also a popular destination for spotters whose hobby is the airplane observation and photography. From the top floor of it you can spot the planes even without disturbing tinted windows.

The observation platforms are located at Terminal 1 between B and C, 4 floor.
The terrace is open daily from 06.30 to 22.00; admission is free.
A parking has been created here from where you have an overview of the airport, but the best spot for taking photographs of landing aircraft is probably walking a bit back towards the terminal into the dead-end road which runs towards a gate.
At the other side the cargo apron and the military air base can be seen, albeit with a lot of clutter. The entire parking lot is ringed with fences so bringing a step ladder is advisable.

Terminal 2, Concourse E Visitor's Terrace
The Visitor's Terrace is in Terminal 2, Concourse E right next to McDonald's.

This observation deck is now fully open. It is open between 10:00 and 18:00 on weekdays and until 19:00 on weekends and holidays with an entrance charge of €3.00. Visitors are no longer required to pass through a security check. When the observation deck is closed you can view from the McDonalds seating area, (if you can get a seat) as it has large windows to see out of.

Viewing Platform next to rwy 18 and approach 07
Right next to rwy 18 (south departure) there is a concrete platform for viewing purposes. However there is a fence between you and the runway, and you will need a small ladder to shoot over it. An A321 will need 100mm right in front of you.
From here you can also see the 07L/R approach. For an A321 on 07R you need around 180mm, for an A330 around 110mm. For 07L approach you need around 240mm for a 747...

There is a road right next to the airport called "Airportring". Take that from the Terminal towards the west, which is where rwy 18 is located. The road will make a left turn and shortly after another left turn. Right in the middle of that second left turn there is a parking lot on the right where you can park. From there you can walk to the platform. It is just a 2-3 minute walk from there.

Getting there by bus/train
Take bus 5514 from Terminal 1. It runs usually every 30 minutes. Get off the bus at "Tor 31", you have to walk back from this bus stop to runway 18W (point 3) but be prepared for a 20-30-minute walk. Another possibility to get to 18W is to exit bus 5514 at "Tor 26" and passing the threshold of 07L and 07R. This takes also about 20-30 Minutes.

Other Spotting Locations
25L/R approach
If the winds are in favor of the 25L/R being used, which is the case most of the times, there is one spot in particular where you can take really good photos of the approaching aircraft. Especially on the weekends you will run into quite a few fellow spotters there. Since this spot brings you pretty close to the action you won't be needing a lot of focal length to get good results. 200mm will be enough to cover the aircraft coming in on 25L. However, since you will be standing closer to 25L the right approach will still be kind of far, so to ensure that you can get all the pictures you want you might actually need a 400mm lens. Just a few examples to show the different motives at this spot.

<gallery>
Image:HZ-AKDTaxiing25.jpg|Saudi Arabian B777-200 taxiing in between 25L/R.
Image:D-ARFETaxi18.jpg|Aero Flight A320 taxiing to rwy 18 using the backway.
Image:D-AIHKApprGoodWeather.jpg|Lufthansa A340-600 approaching 25L.
</gallery>

To get to this location from the airport you will have to get on the Autobahn A5 towards Basel. Get off at the first exit called "Zeppelinheim". After getting off the Autobahn you just drive straight for about 400m and then take a left. There will be a sign for a Recreational Area. Just follow that. That will lead you into a forest and there will be a small parking lot. Park there, since that will be as close as you can get with your car. From there it is a 5 minute walk towards the airport. You will cross the A5 on a bridge and then you're there. Just pick a spot and have fun!

Getting there by bus/train
From the airport you have to go to Sportfeld with S8 or S9 first and change there for Zeppelinheim on line S7. From Zeppelinheim Station take the exit to the west. The road through the forest will lead directly to the spot.
An easy alternative is to take bus OF-64 which runs usually every 30 minutes from Terminal 1 (when in you are in Terminal 2 get on the bus at "Hugo-Eckener-Ring" - a bus station at the big road in front of T2). Bus no. OF-51 runs every 60 minutes from Terminal 2. In both cases you have to exit at the stop Luftbrückendenkmal (US-Air-Base) and walk back a few meters along the airport fence.
From the Main Station just take S7 to Zeppelinheim.
Try www.rmv.de for timetables.

07L/R Approach
Should the situation of a 07L/R approach occur, you have two choices. You can either go to the platform next to rwy 18 as I described already, or there is a small parking lot on either side of the road on the way to the platform, where you can park and then spot. You will be right in between of the left and the right approach. No matter which choice you like better, the approaching planes can't be seen until they're almost right in front of you, so you won't know long in advance what's coming in.

Just take the "Airportring" as described in how to get to the viewing platform next to rwy 18, but park in the lots shortly after the first left turn.

Official Spotting Locations
View Heathrow Observation Deck
A former airline lounge in Terminal 4, between gates 15 and 16. Free to enter during Terminal 4's operating hours. Only available to ticketed passengers.

Terrace at Thistle London Heathrow Hotel
This is a good spotting place since you will see the Rwy 27R / 09L. You do not need to be a overnighter to use this point. The only thing is you have to ask at the reception desk.
Bath Road, Longford
West Drayton UB7 0EQ
Phone: 0871 376 9021 / +44 845 305 8321

Heathrow Academy
Located on North Perimeter Road, many spotters choose to spot from here. This location is good for spotting but no good for photography, because of the perimeter fence! From here runway 09L/27R has very close views and also from here views of aircraft parked in Terminal 1 Stands and part of Terminal 3 stands can be seen. Also from here the maintenance area has clear views, here park up South African (747's and A340's) and Qantas (747's). Also some executive and government planes can be seen. When the weather is right views of 09R/27L can be seen, the weather has to be perfect! Sometimes it is to hazy or sometimes too cloudy. Also at the visitors centre there is an [expensive] cafe - although this is only open on weekdays. But there is a McDonald's over the road. Also here is a a enthusiasts shop - where models, books, magazines, etc are sold. This location is only called the visitors centre, but really you are spotting in the car park it cost £1.00 per hour, so be aware of the weather. Happy Spotting at LHR, there are some interesting planes to be seen here, I have listed some further down the article.

The centre has now re-opened under a new name, of Heathrow Academy. It is open at weekends and school holidays from 10am to 4pm. Within the centre, there is a Ritazza coffee shop (open from 7am to 4pm), there is still a aviation model shop.

}}

The Queens Building
On top of terminal 2. Shut, indefinitely.

Other Spotting Locations
Rwy 27 threshold
Early in the morning, if traffic is coming down on 27R, you could get lucky and witness dual rwy ops/landings. In such cases most the BA heavies will opt for 27L whilst a lot of the T3 traffic will land on 27R.
802551

Block 94 crash gate
A real no-no, the Police will see you off from here quicker than anything! If you dare to venture into here, as it is open, be aware it's not advisable to hang around for too long. Shots of a/c lining up at B94 (for 27L) can be had though, should you get lucky.
881225
Or shots of landing a/c onto 27L also.
887541
Almost as good a spot is across the dual carriageway, which is perfectly fine, where landing a/c can be shot over the fence.
887540
09L Field
There's a field similar to that found at Myrtle Avenue, although this one is for 09L arrivals. Very nice in the mornings when light from the rising Sun hits the fans.
955969
Hilton Hill
Either walk from Myrtle Av. or from terminal 4. Expect a 15 minute walk from Myrtle, 5 from T4. The hill is on the side of the road that leads into terminal 4 itself. Plenty of space to not bother anyone. Very hazy in the summer though. Only good for 27L arrival shots, with a different backdrop from the "normal" LHR ones.
891165
Line ups on 27R
Shooting through the fence on the Northern Perimeter Road. Excellent spot on late summer evenings when the Sun is almost behind you.
949901
Gate by Road Crossing
Only good for 27R ops. Better for landing traffic than departing. Spot is by the mini roundabout near the white huts. Where the a/c cross the road from the airport to the maintenance area there's a red and white gate. Excellent spot for touch downs on 27R.
950006
Aircraft being tugged across the road are also easily shot here too.
802553

This area has now been closed (as of mid March 2006) with the road being diverted around the back of the BA Maintenance Area, so any shots taken from the level crossing are now impossible.

Myrtle Avenue
A field at the end of Myrtle Avenue, by the approach lights for 27L. By foot, either walk from terminal 4 northbound alongside the dual carriageway or southbound from Hatton cross tube. The field can not be missed; it's about a 10 minute walk from either end.
956772
930453
907596

09R banking/climbout shots:Tesco Dukes Green
Excellent spot just outside the airport perimeter, located on the A312.About a 10-15 minute southbound walk from Hatton Cross tube station.A good spot for shooting banking, heavy takeoffs when 09R is use(about 30% of the time)especially for heavy A340s.

809816
816157

27L climbouts:Former Essso garage alongside the southern perimeter road
Popular spot for capturing takeoffs from 27L.Hard to park the car here now as the slip lane as been coned off to prevent such activity!Possible to get a bus to the cargo centre but and walk westbound for about 10minutes.Brick bollards provide useful height for shooting aircraft climbing out slowly after a long takeoff run.

767759
816429

Note : The garage has now re-opened. ( July 2007 )

Perimeter road in north-west corner 27R climbouts
The perimeter road in the far north-west corner also provides some excellent opportunities for 27R climbout shots although the sun is not far round enough for this spot to be effective during the winter and autumn months.

836263
890483

27R final approaches from the mini trading estate
Given the road works and the imminent closing of the 'road crossing road' this area may not be around for too much longer. This spot is on a small trading estate, just off the perimeter road, comprising a series of mainly single tier buildings and is generally quiet at the weekend.Parking the car is not advised here as it is a private estate.Others prefer to shoot from the roundabout on the perimeter road and the little patch of land next to it but I personally find that you are a little too 'under' the aircraft compared to the trading estate spot.

818386

Runway 27R touchdowns
Like the 27R climb outs spot, the light here is only good about 1/2 of the year as you are facing south but it is perfect for evening photography.A few different angles can be had from along the north perimeter road depending on where exactly you shoot from.

907626
907656
902362

Airside Spotting Locations
Airside - Terminal 1; Gate 8 - bmi domestic Lounge
Glazed floor to Ceiling overlooking the eastern end of the Northern Runway (27R/09L). Touchdowns on 27R, and taxiing aircraft visible. Aircraft landing on 09L have mostly left the runway and those for Terminal 3 turned away before getting close.

25901
25182

Airside - Terminal 1; Gates 36-56
Gates 36-56 are located in a glass and steel building at the extreme eastern end of the central area with views over runway 23 and B pier of Terminal 1. There are plenty of windows that line up with gaps in the parked aircraft and photography is best in the afternoon. On the down side the northern most gate offering the best views can be closed off by moveable barriers if it is being used for flights to Israel.
WARNING:If you don't know the gate your flight is departing from allow time to walk back to the main departure lounge (without a moving walkway)to check the monitors there.

Airside - Terminal 4
In addition to the windows behind the duty free shop the Gate 23 area has windows overlooking the southern taxiway and 27L holding point.
WARNING:If you don't know the gate your flight is departing from allow time to walk back to the main departure lounge (without a moving walkway) to check the monitors there.

Airside - Terminal 5
If you take a trip to Terminal 5, you will be able to capture ground traffic, but also departures and arrivals on all runways, depending on which side of the terminal you are. If you arrive at terminal 5 by the main entrance, and turn left or right before entering the terminal, you will get to the end of the terminal next to the arriving perimeter roads. From here, you will be able to see ground traffic and lots of pushbacks from the Terminal 5 ramps. If the active runways are 09's then you will be able to see very close arrivals and departures at your eyeline, and if the active is 27's then you will be able to photograph climb outs.
Sometimes police will stop you from spotting here, but i shouldn't see it occurring much, as it's only happened to me once.

6506394

Locations to Avoid
Airport Car Parks
I used to use the airport short stay car parks to spot, but since security has rose the BAA security move you on VERY quickly. These are very expensive anyway, MY HINT IS TO NOT SPOT FROM THE CAR PARKS!

Regular Traffic
British Airways, Heavies from Asia, EU Carriers, Boeing 787/777/767/757/747 and Airbus A330 from America.

Facilities and Transportation
Heathrow airport is connected directly by Tube (Piccadilly line) and Rail (Heathrow Express) to central London. The Tube is not too expensive for a day ticket, and it takes about 45 minutes from Kings Cross. The Heathrow Express is much faster, but it is a lot more expensive and doesn't allow you to stop at Hatton Cross, which is a more advised station than Heathrow Terminals 1,2&3.
There are also a number of buses which go to Heathrow from cities in the southeast, but I have not used these myself.

Get off at the Hatton Cross tube station to catch 27L&R Arrivals and 9L&R Departures, with most of the named sites not a long walk away.

From Heathrow airport itself (T's 1,2&3) you can catch a free bus to the new Terminal 5 site where you can see 27L&R Departures and 9L&R arrivals not a long walk away.

South West Trains runs a regular service from Central London / Clapham Junction to Feltham, where it is easy to board the 4 times hourly Service 285 to Hatton Cross Tube Station, where it is an easy walk to view 27L/R arrivals.
