Outside the terminal building there are some seats facing the runway over the water, this area is mainly used by airport staff on a smoking break or passengers in need of a pre flight cigarette. From here only the eastern half of the runway can be seen.

In December 2005 the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) extension to the airport terminal opened.
You can use the westbound DLR trains to reach either Bank or Tower Hill station (note: getting to Tower Hill often requires a change at Westferry). From Bank or Tower Hill you can use the Tube (Circle Line is recommended) to reach major stations such as Kings Cross, Paddington, Victoria or Liverpool Street. Between Canning Town and Stratford, the Jubilee Line is faster than using the DLR (with a change at Poplar). If either route is adversely affected by engineering works, consider taking the 473 bus route between Plaistow Station (District Line) and City Airport. This also calls at Custom House library (operated by Newham Council), which includes a computing/internet room.
