Gillespie Field is located in the middle of El Cajon, California. Gillespie field is home to many flight schools and some private jet operations. There are 774 aircraft based at the airport. In 1942 the USMC chose this site to conduct parachute training. In September of that year Camp Gillespie was completed and named in honor of Lieutenant Archibald Gillespie. In 1944 the airport was re commissioned as Marin Corps Aux Airfield Gillespie. In 1947 the airport was given to San Diego County and turned into a general aviaion facility. Gillespie is home to the San Diego Aerospace Museum restoration facility.
